Caminito del Rey: A Spectacular Hiking Experience in Andalusia

If you are on vacation in southern Spain, you cannot miss one of the most spectacular hiking experiences in Europe: the Caminito del Rey. This unique path, suspended over the cliffs of an impressive gorge, combines adventure, nature, and breathtaking views. In this article, we tell you everything you need to know before visiting.

What is the Caminito del Rey?

The Caminito del Rey, literally “The King’s Path,” is located in Málaga province, near the village of Ardales. The trail winds along the steep cliffs of the Desfiladero de los Gaitanes and is approximately 7.7 kilometers long. Years ago it was known as one of the most dangerous trails in the world, but today it is fully renovated and safe for visitors. You will walk on wooden walkways that are sometimes over 100 meters above the river – an unforgettable experience!

Tickets & opening times

The trail is very popular, so it is recommended to book your tickets online in advance. Tickets are often sold out at the entrance. The entrance fee is around €10 per person. Tickets can be purchased on the official Caminito del Rey website.

Opening times:

  • Tuesday to Sunday: 09:30 – 17:00 (last entry depends on season)

  • Monday: Closed

Always check the official website for current times and availability, especially in summer or bad weather.

What to expect

During your hike on the Caminito del Rey you will see:

  • Spectacular gorges with steep cliffs

  • Crystal-clear water of the Guadalhorce River below your feet

  • Hanging walkways and panoramic viewpoints

  • A unique combination of nature, adventure, and history

In addition to the natural beauty, you will also encounter traces of the past. Old canals, bridges, and the imposing dam remind you that this path was once an important work route. During the hike, you will discover both stunning landscapes and a piece of Andalusian history.

Who is it for?

The Caminito is suitable for anyone with normal physical fitness. Children from 8 years old are welcome. It is not a difficult mountain hike, but vertigo may be a challenge due to the spectacular heights.

Practical tips

  • Wear appropriate shoes – the path is easy to walk, but good grip is recommended.

  • Bring water and snacks – there are no facilities along the route.

  • Book online – this ensures your entry.

  • Sun protection – a hat and sunscreen are essential in summer.

How to get there

The Caminito del Rey is about 60 km north of Málaga. You can reach it by car (parking is available at both entrances) or by train to El Chorro station. From Málaga, Marbella, or Estepona it is easily accessible.

Reception Address:

Puerto de las Atalayas, El Chorro, 29550 Ardales, Málaga, España
