Holy Week is one of the most important festivities in the city of Malaga, both at a religious and cultural level. It’s an experience declared as an International Tourist Interest by the Ministry of Industry, Tourism and Commerce of Spain, which attracts thousands of visitors every year. Below, we tell you all the details about this emblematic week. Keep reading!
This holiday, also known as Easter Week, has been celebrated for no less than 525 years, and year after year it’s gaining more popularity. This 2022, Holy Week will take place from 10 to 17 April, from Palm Sunday to Easter Sunday. During these holidays, Malaga will be filled with impressive processions and thrones accompanied by the Nazarenes and the capirotes.
The official route of the processions begins in the Alameda Principal, turns left around the statue of the Marquis of Larios, runs along the street of Larios and a section of Granada Street. All brotherhoods share this path, although each leaves from their brotherhood or corresponding church. And how to guarantee a good place to see the processions? You can rent a chair in the Association of Brotherhoods. Some of the most popular Brotherhoods are: the Cofradía de la Pollinica, the Cofradía de la Paloma and the Cofradía de las Penas.
On the other hand, you can’t miss the “encierros”, the time to save the thrones. It’s the meeting between the throne of Christ and the throne of the Virgin, the bearers raise them to the rhythm of the National Anthem with the applause of the public.
